Traumatic Injuries
These sports injuries occur suddenly and are obvious, for example a pulled calf muscle or ruptured Achilles tendon. When a body part is put under sufficient stress and strain, damage of the tissues occurs. The result is pain, swelling and bruising.
Treatment for traumatic sports injuries is aimed at reducing pain and swelling, facilitating the healing process, rehabilitation and education.
Overuse/Repetitive Injuries
These sports injuries are subtle injuries which have a slow onset, beginning with discomfort and gradually worsening. They are directly associated with a particular repetitive action, for example running and shin splints.
Treatment for overuse sports injuries is aimed at identification and treatment of the cause with special attention being given to education, biomechanics and training programmes.
Early intervention is essential for the treatment of all injuries.
